One of the most important events in the history of Bratsigovo is the April Insurrection of 1876 – its footprints can be seen even now a days in many places around this city of Rhodope. Here the past is not forgotten, and is converted into a natural part of urban landscapes – such as parks, authentic houses and memorial tombstones.
To understand Bratsigovo today, spend part of your time in the city to see the collections of the Historical Museum – located in beautiful Renaissance buildings. Take a walk through the past of the city; relive the battles of the April Insurrection, and meet the most famous construction masters during the Renaissance.
Do not miss the opportunity to take a look at the other exhibitions in the museum. In the native house of Vasil Petleshkov is maintained the same atmosphere as when the revolutionary lived here.
An interesting ethnographic exposition is presented in Kánevata kashta (the house of Kanev).
In another Renaissance house – Popovata kashta – (Popov’s house) – you will see samples of the most popular buildings, created by the hands of the famous construction masters of Bratsigovo. The Masters, emigrants from Kosturska Macedonia, worked throughout the Ottoman Empire (they constructed most of the houses in the old town of Plovdiv, the church St. Nedelya in Sofia, bridges, belfry towers, etc.). They had their own secret language of more than 700 words, created to preserve the secrets of their craft.
