Description
A few kilometers from Velingrad are the beautiful rocks “Slaveevi skali” (The rocks of the nightingale). It is a natural phenomenon in the Alabak Massif. It is an interesting complex of rocks at the foot of the Chernovets peak, which is northwest of Velingrad. For anyone who climbs to the rocks reveals a unique panoramic view of the city, the valley of Chépino and the sections of Rhodope Batashka, Alabak and Karkariya.
The phenomenon of the rocks can be reached by a special marked route. The path starts from the chapel “St. George”, which is above the Kamenitsa area and goes to the “St. Nikola” chapel. From there you reach the church “Nikulyova tsarkva”, where the road separates – in one direction is “Stariyat chark”, and in the other – “Slaveevi skali”. There is a small trail leading up to the rocks that have historical and archaeological value. After climbing the ridge, the Slaveevi skali rocks are in front of you.Through one small staircase you can rise to the highest part of the phenomenon. From there opens a unique view of the majestic mountains.The large rock is high 10 meters and stands out from the others around it. Archaeologists have discovered that Slaveevi skali are at the center of an ancient Thracian necropolis, which occupies an area of several square kilometers. According to the carving of the rocks, historians believe that this was a sacred place with sanctuaries and places for sacrifice. During the archaeological excavations have been found many pieces of pottery and small spoons of clay, dating from the late Bronze age and the beginning of the Iron Age.
