Description
The Kozi kamak (The Goats stone) rock sanctuary is located at the southwest base of Beslet Peak (Western Rodopes).
The 30 m high rock is sacralized, and access to its summit is possible by narrow, steep pathways, carved in ancient times.
The most sacred part of the sanctuary is in the highest and smoothest place, where there is a huge carved rock “cauldron”, separated from the south side with a wooden wall. From the “cauldron” comes a large groove through which the liquid was carried along the southern wall of the sacred rock. On the north side of the rock platform are many groups of circular stone signs, which, according to some scientifics, are astronomical star charts of the constellations of Cassiopeia and Cepheus.
From the village Kovachevica Kozi kamak can be reached by car up to the area “Beslet.” After you must pass an extensive meadow and will get out to a crossroad. Here you will see two signs, pointing the direction to the peak Beslet and the sanctuary ¨Kozi kamak¨. From there you have to take the road to the left, which leads to the buildings of the farm. (The car can be left near the farm buildings.) The distance from the village to farm buildings is about 13.5 kilometers. To reach the sanctuary you must continue on foot on a wide path marked the left side. At this point you can go wrong, because from the earth road you will see a large rock upward direction. It is important to follow the direction to the left of the road. After a climb, it takes about 30 minutes of walking through the forest. When you get to the base of the rock, you must turn on the left path, which leads to steps, carved into the rock thousands of years ago.
