CHAPEL OF St. GEORGE

The chapel of St. George is located on the hill south of Kamenitsa district. In this place in the past there has been a monastery destroyed during the forced conversion to Islam. Its name is transferred on the hill “Gergyovitsa”; In the local dialect – “Gergevana.”

This was one of the oldest chapels, venerated by the locals. Later the chapel was named St. George and about its creation are legends. The place was not chosen by chance. During excavations in the 30’s of the twentieth century found the foundations of an ancient monastery, which had been destroyed by the Vandals (later their families were followed by thousands of misfortunes).

The time had erased all traces of the existence of this monastery, but have being found sacred objects, clerical skeletons, buried near the altar, Venetian silver coins, etc.. Every year, on St. George’s Day, around the chapel there is a fair with a religious church service, songs and dances.
